5 defenders that Mourinho could sign for Man United to replace the injured Bailly

Raphael Varane is among the potential prospects that Mourinho could bring to Old Trafford in January to replace Bailly.

Manchester United have suffered a big setback with the news that defender Eric Bailly could be out for up to three months.
Bailly has a "serious" ankle injury that has kept him out of action since United's defeat by Chelsea in November.
And the news could prompt manager Jose Mourinho to dip into the transfer market in search of an adequate replacement for the 23-year-old.
The £30 million buy from Villarreal was a consistent performer in United's charge to Europa League glory last season.
But Mourinho has struggled to fill the void left by the Ivory Coast international as he has chopped and changed with his central defensive pairing in recent weeks.
The Portuguese boss has Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcus Rojo and Victor Lindelof all at his disposal, but could be tempted for a move for one of the potential targets we've pinpointed here...

Samuel Umtiti

Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti has cropped up on Jose's radar, as he continues to stall over a new contract at the Nou Camp.
The 24-year-old Frenchman is currently out injured but has earned plenty of plaudits since his move to the Catalan club at the start of the 2016 season.
And his performances have not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford as Mourinho is said to be a big admirer of the former Lyon man.
Umtiti has Champions League experience and would certainly be an upgrade on United's current roster.
Whether Barca would be willing to let Umtiti go is another question however, as they only have ex-Arsenal player Thomas Vermaelen as back-up and are still contesting three trophies this season.

Raphael Varane

We couldn't have a list of potential defensive targets for Manchester United without mentioning this man.
Varane has been linked with United so many times we've lost count, but for one reason or another the deal has never happened.
Mourinho signed the big Frenchman from Lens whilst manager of Real Madrid, and the pair continue to have a good relationship.
The 24-year-old is reportedly unsettled at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid's indifferent form this season a key factor, and it is rumoured he would be open to reuniting with the Special One again.
One stumbling block could be the fee however, with Varane likely to command a small fortune it is unlikely United's owners would give the go-ahead to spend big, having only just paid over £30 million for Victor Lindelof in the summer.

Jonny Evans

It's hardly one to get the pulses raising we know, but hear us out.
A former United player himself, Evans is no stranger to the surroundings of Old Trafford.
He spent nine years at the club, winning the Premier League three times before departing for West Brom in 2015.
Evans' stock has risen since then and he has attracted plenty of interest, including from the likes of United's rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.
With West Brom floundering in the bottom half of the table, it is thought Evans would jump at the chance to get back involved in Champions League action.
The Northern Irishman is still only 29, and with a price tag likely to be around the £25 million mark, it would represent good value for United to bring Evans in as a reinforcement.
Not that Jose cares much about saving the pennies mind you...

Clement Lenglet

Whilst Mourinho is in search of someone to deputise for Bailly through the middle, he is also on the hunt for a left back.
In Sevilla's Clement Lenglet, he would have both. As the French youngster can play either position comfortably.
The 22-year-old has featured quite heavily through the middle for the Spanish side this season, including in the 3-3 Champions League draw with Liverpool.
Previously a French Ligue 2 winner with Nantes, Lenglet has represented the French national team at every level from under-16 to under-21, but is yet to make his debut for the senior side.
It is rumoured that United would face stiff competition for Lenglet from neighbours Manchester City though, with Pep Guardiola also rumoured to be keen.

David Luiz

A name that many United fans would probably not wish to see in this list, but it could happen.
The eccentric Brazilian has fallen out of favour with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and is reported to be seeking first team football elsewhere if his situation doesn't improve.
Luiz knows Jose Mourinho all too well from their time at Stamford Bridge together, and indeed it was Jose who sold the 30-year-old to PSG during his second spell there.
That was prior to Luiz playing a starring role in Chelsea's championship-winning team of last season though, and he has matured into a more rounded defender.
It is unlikely Chelsea would offload Luiz to a rival, but then again they did let Nemanja Matic go the same way, so anything is possible.
