Karl Darlow has backed his close mate and Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles to quickly resume his “excellent” season so far.

The former Nottingham Forest defender, who signed for the Magpies with Darlow back in summer 2014, came off during the 3-1 win against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

But after suffering a bout of sickness, he is likely to return to the team against Barnsley on Tuesday night.
Darlow told the Chronicle: “I think he just felt a little bit ill.

“I wasn’t sure what was up with him or how bad it was, but up until that point, he was excellent as he has been all season.

“We brought Grant Hanley on and we were still solid.

“It’s good, we have strength in depth in the side and we are going to need it.”

Newcastle have a host of options in the centre of defence with Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Chancel Mbemba and Scotland international Grant Hanley all battling for places.

Darlow feels that the hot competition for places in every department can only be a good thing.

He said: “Everybody knows that we are striving to be back in the Premier League so everybody is pulling to go in the same direction to get back up there.

“We are all singing off the same hymn sheet.”

The win against Brentford made it three wins in a row for Newcastle and they are now unbeaten in five matches in all competitions.

Darlow reflected: “They are a good side, they were seventh before the game kicked off.
“It goes to show that we can be dominant against good sides.

“We needed that result a few weeks ago against Norwich and we went to Rotherham for another difficult game.

“This league can be very difficult and we know we need to be on our game to pull off results.
“Against Brentford, we knew we were very good.”
