Diego Costa was a “disgrace” last season but is now causing defenders havoc – Wilkins

Ray Wilkins believes that Diego Costa was close to becoming a “disgrace” for Chelsea last season but is impressed by the way the striker has caused “havoc” this campaign for defenders.

Costa has 14 goals in the Premier League this season but missed the last match against Leicester City amid rumours of a bust-up with manager Antonio Conte.

The striker has been one of the league’s top players this year, playing a pivotal role in Chelsea’s title charge and Wilkins has praised the way the Brazilian-born Spaniard terrorises defenders.

The former Chelsea man also points to last season, where poor form led to problems for Costa, with Wilkins suggesting the 28-year-old almost went too far.

Wilkins told Sky Sports: “He has been in fantastic form. Last year the guy was almost a disgrace, this year he has just been superb. He causes havoc for everyone.

“This guy is scoring every type of goal this year, and if you ask any defender, they would say he is probably the toughest guy to play against.”

Chelsea fans will be hoping Costa can be persuaded to stay at the club despite speculation about a bid from the Chinese Super League.
